Conference on How to Include EU Mobile Citizens in the Political Life of their Welcoming Country

15 May 2019:3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Local authorities and civil society organizations from all over Europe will gather in Caen, France on Wednesday 15th May (15:00 – 18:00) to discuss how to boost the political inclusion of EU mobile citizens, e.g. the more than 17 million European citizens who are living in another EU country.

How to ensure their political integration in their host country? In other words, how to ensure that these citizens are interested in taking part in elections and are able to do it easily without incurring in administrative hurdles and lack of clear information?

Solutions to these questions will be shared during the event in Caen by experts as well as by local authorities and CSOs. In the first part, the tools that have been developed in the framework of the FAIR EU project will be presented: Dr Derek S. Hutcheson (Malmö University) will provide an overview of the current state of the political rights of EU mobile citizens; Thomas Huddleston (MPG) will share his experience in leading a campaign to engage citizens in local elections;  Anna Zaremba (ECAS) will present the actions taken to crowdsource citizens’ opinions.

The second part of the event will leave the floor to local authorities and participants: the Cities of Milan (Italy), Paris (France) and Vejle (Denmark) will kick off the exchange of best practices, that will later take the shape of a world café reflecting on the barriers and motivations for European mobile citizens to take part in the political life of their hosting country.
